Cleona Mae Allen


Coffeyville -

Cleona Mae Allen, 80, of Independence passed away Friday, July 10, 2009, at her home.

She was born May 12, 1929 on the Ganser Ranch south of Wood Lake, Nebraska, the daughter of Ralph Edwin and Nora Bell (Clark) Hill. When she was one year old the family moved to the Moon Lake Ranch.

Her parents had sheep, cattle and milk cows. As a child Cleona’s chores where to herd the sheep. A house was built over a tank where water flowed from the artesian wells, this served as the family refigerator. When she was 12 or 13 years old Cleona was baptized in Moon Lake, and accepted the Lord.

On June 4, 1947, she married Elmer Wayne Allen at Ainsworth, Nebraska. Following their married they bought a farm and built a house north of Ainsworth, whre they lived until 1952 when they moved to rural Warrensburg, Missouri. They farmed in Warrensburg until May 1962 when they moved to a farm north and west of Yates Center, Kansas. While at Yates Center, Elmer farmed and had a custom hay bailing operation. They moved to Independence in 1976 where Elmer and Cleona established Allen’s Shoe Repair Shop on South 10th Street, and Allen’s Sandblasting and Painting. Elmer preceded her in death on January 17, 1982.

Cleona was a member of the Community Christian Church in Independence. She enjoyed working in her garden, painting using oil and acrylic paints, and loved to bake and try new recipes.

Survivors include three daughters, Judy Hall and husband Tom of Independence, Cathy Tucker and husband Johnny of Independence, and Marilyn Scott and husband Larry of Canton, KS; two sons, Lonny Allen and wife Diana of Independence, and Danny Allen and wife Brinda of Shamrock, Texas; one brother, Harold Edwin Hill of Moon Lake Ranch, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, Justin Wayne Allen, and one great-grandson, Adrien Allen-Asebedo, one brother, Charles Leslie Hill.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2009 in the Community Christian Church, 3001 South 10th St., Independence, KS, with Pastor Steve Butler officiating. Burial will follow in the Harrisonville Cemetery near Bolton, Kansas.

Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Community Christian Church in Independence; the family will receive friends during this time.

Fayette V. Mahan

Fayette V. Mahan, 92, of Coffeyville, passed away May 26, 2009, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Fayette Vandetta Mahan was born on October 8, 1916 in Washington Township, Crawford County, Kansas to Frank and Willie May (Graham) Porter. She grew up and and attended school in Independence.

She was married to Herman Richard, and later to William Mahan, both preceded her in death. During her life she lived in Salina, and Wichita, KS, Gallup, New Mexico, Seattle, Washington, and Alaska. Fayette was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary E. Smith of Coffeyville, and Avis Brooks and husband, Isaac of Germantown, Maryland; four brothers, Raymond Cain and wife, Wilmarie of Kansas City, MO, Edward Cain of La Mesa, CA, Graham Cain and wife Carolyn of Wichita, and Robert Cain and wife Janice, of Cathedral City, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, and two sisters.

A Memorial Service and Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church, 6th and Cedar in Coffeyville with Reverend W.E. Colbert officiating. Inurnment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Roger Wayne Sunday

Roger Wayne Sunday, 37, of South Coffeyville, OK, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009 at his home.

He was born June 18, 1972 at Coffeyville, KS to Billy Wayne and Anna M. (Hill) Sunday. He grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, and Caney areas, completing his education at Caney Valley High School.

He married Nancy McClure, they were later divorced.

Roger was employed as a machine operator working at several different companies including AIW until becoming disabled. The last several months he helped his sister Billie at B-Tan in South Coffeyville.

Roger enjoyed being with his family, fishing, tinkering with cars, spending time on eBay, and loved dogs.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Anna and Benny Benjamin of rural Tyro; four sisters, Tracie Feeback of Wann, OK, Stacie and Rob Hough of South Coffeyville, OK, Billie and Mark Henderson of South Coffeyville, OK, and Misty Sunday of Cherryvale; numerous nieces one nephews; one great niece and one great nephew; and his companion Chico, the Chihuahua.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 in the South Coffeyville United Methodist Church, 600 Park Blvd. with Pastor Steve Posey officiating. Burial will follow in the North Edna Cemetery at Edna, KS.

Helen L. Brogan

Helen Louise Brogan, 87, of Lawrence, KS formerly of Coffeyville, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 18, 1921, in Craig County, Oklahoma the oldest daughter of Les and Anna (Barker) Seigel. She was one of 11 children. Craig County was formerly Indian Territory and Helen was extremely proud of her Native American Heritage. Her father was a tribal roll member of the Delaware Nation, and her mother was a tribal roll member of the Cherokee Nation.

Helen grew up and attended school in Welch and Vinita, Oklahoma, before moving to Coffeyville in 1938 where she worked for Sears and Roebuck.

On November 20, 1940 she married John E. Brogan in Coffeyville. John’s WWII military service moved them to Los Angeles, CA and Colorado Springs, CO. Following his discharge from the military they returned to Coffeyville and she returned to Sears intending to only work through the Christmas Holidays. Some 42 years later she retired from Sears after being the Sears Credit Manager for many of those years at what she called “the big store” on West 9th St. John preceded her in death on April 10, 2003. Following her husbands death she continued to make her home in Coffeyville until moving to Lawrence 5 years ago to be near her daughter and family.

Helen and John are fondly remembered for their love of dancing. They were active in several Coffeyville Dance Clubs and you could find them dancing somewhere almost every weekend.

Helen was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville, Holy Name Altar Society, and the VFW and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She always participated and helped with the 4th of July Flag raising at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Survivors include her daughter, Jon Kay Murphy and husband Ron of Lawrence, KS; her son, Thomas M. Brogan and wife LaDonna of Spring, TX; three grandsons, Michael, Patrick, and Matthew; one granddaughter, Melissa; three great-grandsons, Koty, Chase, and Johnathan; two great granddaughters, Ellie and Sarah; two brothers, Gene Seigel of Tulsa, OK, and Jerry Seigel of Warrensburg, Missouri; and two sisters, Ruby Armstrong of Broken Arrow, OK, and Jimi Lou Rodman of Wichita, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two infant grandsons, Christopher Brian Murphy, and Mitchell Timothy Brogan; three brothers and three sisters.

A Rosary Vigil Service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 29, 2009 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. Mass of Christian Burial will immediately follow with Father Ben Nguyen officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Coffeyville.

Terri Renee Searles

Terri Renee’ Searles, 39, of Coffeyville, passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident near Blackwell, OK.

She was born September 19, 1969 at Coffeyville to Charles and Sue (Zillifro) Jett. Terri grew up and attended school in Coffeyville, following high school she attended Coffeyville Community College. She lived in the Coffeyville and Edna area all of her life.

On February 21, 2003 she married Mark Searles at Coffeyville. Following their marriage they made their home in rural Coffeyville, where Terri was employed as Manager of Day’s Inn and Suites.

Terri had attended the First Church of the Nazarene, and for several years was active in the Coffeyville Municipal Band. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working with wood.

Survivors include her husband, Mark of the home; one son, Cody Weil of Wann, OK; one daughter, Rumor Weil of Wann, OK; one step-son, Shane Searles of Altamont; one step-daughter, Amber Walker of McCune; her mother and step-father, Sue and Larry Lukens of Coffeyville; her father, Charles Jett of Johnstown, CO; her maternal grandmother, Julia Zillifro of Coffeyville; her brothers and sisters, Chuck Lukens, Tina Myers, Roy Lukens, Cassie Lukens, Jamie Lukens, Matt Lukens, Randy Lukens, David Jett, Darrin Jett, and Dawn Arnt; and three grandchildren, Andon and Cadence Searles, and Kaylee Walker.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at the First Church of the Nazarene, 2300 West 1st St. in Coffeyville with Rev. C.L. Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Lucy L. Weimer

Lucy Lee Weimer, 78, of rural Independence, passed away Monday, June 22, 2009, at Windsor Place in Coffeyville.

She was born March 26, 1931 in Dewey, Oklahoma, to William H. and Maggie (Sams) Cape, and attended Bartlesville schools.

On February 14, 1977, in Miami, Oklahoma, she was united in marriage to Ron Weimer and he survives at the home. She was a Nursing Assistant, working locally in nursing homes, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, and providing home care. She was very much loved by her patients.

She was a member of Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville. She collected bears of all kinds, loved country living, her work, her clients, and most of all her family.

Survivors include her husband, Ron of the home; three sons, Rick Kosty of Coffeyville, Walt Kosty of Oklahoma, and Calvin “Sparky” Boyd, Jr. of Nebraska, one daughter, Patty Foster of Coffeyville; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Paul, and a sister, Maggie.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Jefferson Cemetery in Jefferson, Kansas with Rev. Wayne Martin of Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church in Coffeyville officiating.

Alma Viola Williamson

Alma Viola Williamson

Alma Viola Williamson, 92, of Coffeyville passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

She was born November 24, 1916, seven miles south of Plains, KS to Henry and Edith (Ward) Troutman. She grew up in the Plains area where she completed her education.

In 1937 she married Phillip Jarrett, two children were born to this marriage.

In 1951 she married Francis Williamson at Holy Name Catholic Church in Coffeyville. Mr. Williamson preceded her in death on January 11, 1961.

Mrs. Williamson was a longtime Coffeyville business woman, she owned and managed the Truck Stop Cafe (later known as Bailey’s Truck Stop) on Northeast Street from 1950 to1956. In 1956 she joined her husband Francis in the Retail Liquor Business on Walnut Street. In 1965 she relocated the Liquor Store to the 800 Block of east 11th St. where she operated the Liquor Store and Pottery Business until 1986. She continued to operate the Pottery Business until 1998. After retiring she continued to make her home 1105 Davis St. until the flood of 2007, after the flood she moved in with her grandson Ron Garrison and his wife Robin on Rt. 2, Coffeyville.

Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Mae Garrison of Copan, OK; three grandchildren, Ron Garrison of Coffeyville, Bill Garrison of South Coffeyville, OK, and Shelly Beaston of Copan, OK; thirteen great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, both of her husbands, one daughter, Kay Jean, one granddaughter, Shirley Kay, and one great-grandson, Phillip John, and one son-in-law former longtime Coffeyville businessman Charles Garrison.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2009 in Calvary Cemetery in Coffeyville with Bro. Ron Garrison of the First Southern Baptist Church in Cherryvale officiating.

Ron Edens

Ron D. Edens, 55, of rural Caney passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009.

He was born October 25, 1953, at Coffeyville to Doyle “Dick” and Pauline (Brown) Edens. Ron grew up in the Caney area where he attended school graduating from Caney High School in 1972.

In 1994 he married Vicki Gourley at Park City, KS. Following their marriage they lived in Caney until moving to their home northeast of Caney in September 2008.

Ron was employed with the City of Caney for many years. He was an active member of the Tyro Christian Church, where he enjoyed singing with the Forgiven Trio and the Frye Brothers. Ron was an active Chuck Wagon racer, belonging to the Arkansas Church Wagon Racing Association and the Mid-West Chuck Wagon Associating. For five years he organized the Chautauqua Hills Chuck Wagon Races at the Red Buffalo Ranch northwest of Sedan.

Survivors include his wife, Vicki of the home; two daughters, Robyn Edens of Baytown, TX, and Casey Cartmell of El Dorado, KS; one son, Daniel Duff of Peru, KS; three brothers, Jim Edens of Peru, KS, Richard Edens of Texas City, TX, and Danny Edens of Cleveland, OK; one sister, Beverly Rollins of Bartlesville, OK; and eight grandchildren, Cale, Dillon, Addison, Jaggert, Felicity, Jarrett, and Kayelon.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 19, 2009 in the Tyro Christian Church with David Bycroft officiating. Burial will be in Fawn Creek Cemetery northeast of Tyro.
